Technology is a great example of an industry that can serve corporations in the present. For example let’s say you have a need for a system that helps you keep track of all your customer purchase data. You buy a proprietary solution that fits your current needs and you think you are all set. Because it is a proprietary solution you probably had to pay a premium for the system. As far as service goes the majority of these types of solutions have limited providers who can work on updating or upgrading the inner workings of the operating system. Plus the system was likely developed and designed by only a few people inside the company. All the thinking was internally generated. You are now married for life to this “one size serves all solution.”
The question to ponder is if there is another way? The short answer is yes! I would suggest to never buy anything that limits your future. Stay away from doing business with monopolies. As in the board game once a monopoly has been established it costs you quite a lot when you have to deal with them.
Do not box yourself in by selecting a solution that is not flexible. Pick an open source solution as they provide you an ability to meet your evolving needs as your business evolves.
The same approach applies to marketing and branding your business. Choose a positioning that is broad enough so you are not limited in where you can go tomorrow. Also make sure your communication builds for where you are heading. Keep all your doors open and be broad enough to have your future plans fully integratable into the world you currently operate in.
Choosing an open solution today saves time and money tomorrow.
