Leaders tend to under-communicate. My guess, a main reason is they are very busy with their own work. Because of all the meetings and responsibilities of being a leader they are mainly focused on their to-do lists.
- Are they engaging with their team?
Stop for a moment and think about the message a leader is sending with their head down doing their own tasks.
- Are they helping make the team members better at their jobs?
- Are they fostering a collaborative environment?
- Are they demonstrating that they care about the team?
- Is the team helping them in a synergistic way?
The answer to all these questions is no!
The world has evolved and leaders need to change how they operate. Transparency has become more critical. With information more important than ever before, the sharing of it from the top down is essential to building an efficient, collaborative group. Sometimes the leader doesn’t have all the answers. That is a perfect time for the leader to let others know that it’s okay to ask for help if you are stuck. This fosters a culture where everyone assists each other and creates an environment where each person feels that they are needed. Each individual plays a role in the success of the business. That need translates into a positive work environment which makes the business a place where other people want to join.
More frequent open communication by the leader creates a better work environment. The company through its leader’s over-communicating becomes a desired destination for new employees too.
Remember to talk with your team more. Over-communicating leads to better results for everyone.
