It’s overtime, sudden death, a shoot out, extra innings, Black Friday, Cyber Monday…. on all counts the finish line is within sight and the clock is ticking. I have found that people tend to fall into three categories when they get close to approaching the end of the year.
- Crawlers: Exhausted by the past year, they limp towards December 31st, yearning for the year’s end.
- Maintenance Crew: They remain steady throughout most of the month, but their pace falters as the finish line looms.
- Sprinters: These are the finishers, the go-getters who give it their all until the very last minute. They’re driven to finish strong, exceeding their goals and building momentum for the New Year!
Which One are You?
I love being around the sprinters, the finishers, the ones who are giving their all. Their enthusiasm and determination are infectious, motivating themselves and lifting everyone around them. They embody the spirit of the final lap: pushing limits, forging connections, and leaving a lasting impression.
Here are some ways you can join the ranks of the sprinters:
- Demonstrate leadership: Show your team the importance of going the extra mile, pushing boundaries, inspiring others to do the same, even in the final days.
- Network strategically: Reach out to new contacts and build valuable connections for the future plus rekindle existing relationships.
Strengthen relationships: Invest time in the people who matter most. - Express gratitude: Send handwritten notes thanking colleagues, clients, and others for their contributions throughout the year. I write 5-10 letters to the bosses of people who have helped me throughout the year which results in them being recognized for their actions. From years past, I have been told some of the specifics in those letters have found their way into the person’s annual review. Wow, helping others really is a great way to finish the year in a powerful way.
- Build others up: By supporting and encouraging others, you elevate yourself in the process.
- Give back to your community: Make a difference by helping those less fortunate. Consider giving extra to a street vendor you recognize, a gift card to a local coffee shop for your favorite server. Another person who I enjoy giving extra to is my handyman who fixes every situation I get myself into.😉
Remember, the end of the year is not just a conclusion; it’s an opportunity for a fresh start. Build your momentum for the coming year!
