Key Tip: Everything you do is seen
Remember you are always visible individually to everyone else on the call. I have found that thinking and acting as if the camera is on you all the time is a good way to remember that everything you do is caught on film in real time to everyone throughout the call. Thus, sitting up straight makes it appear you are paying attention and if that is not occurring people may conclude the opposite 🙂
Key Tip: Always look forward as that creates the impression you are in effect making eye contact with the person speaking
You are forewarned that others will notice and see that you are not fully engaged. Multitasking sends the message that the people who are in the call are not that important! ( don’t eat during the calls and don’t try to go through emails either. )
If you need to move away from your desk you can change the picture to just your name as opposed to a blank screen with you missing.
Key Tip: Think before you speak
When you speak organize your thoughts ahead of time as dead air or um’s and uh’s are magnified in this type of setting.
Try to not interrupt someone else when they are speaking as interruptions inhibit both people from being heard.
When the call is almost over ask the group if they have any questions or additional thoughts. This tactic ensures everyone has had an opportunity to speak if they desire.
As a last act, summarize the key points of the call and set up a follow up call if necessary.
