As 2013 begins, it is important to remind yourself what matters most in your relationships. First, make sure you are someone that is dependable. That means, what you say is what you do. If you make a promise to be there at 8AM, be there at 8AM! If you say you will deliver a proposal by close of business Tuesday, make darn sure you have it to them by 5PM Tuesday.
Sometimes what you say cannot be done when you promised. What do you do in that situation? I have found being totally honest, is the best course of action. Tell them everything. Do not withhold anything, as they could eventually find out, and it is always better to be in front of a situation, rather than reacting after the fact. Plus, by being totally open, you help them believe what you are saying is the whole truth.
The result of being dependable and honest is a trusting relationship that will stand the test of time.
